6/7th September - The Roaches, Staffordshire

Post by kudos »

Dear all,

It is my great pleasure to announce the first hut meet of the season.

On the weekend of 6th and 7th September, the club will be staying at the Don Whillans Memorial Hut, at (or should that be in?) the top grit climbing venue that is The Roaches, in sunny Staffordshire.

Image
That buttress on the skyline on the left contains Valkerie, arguably the worlds best gritstone VS. Yes, it's very close!

For those that have visited before, I need say no more, but for those that haven't, well this is a unique hut. Literally a stones throw from the climbing, this is a good hut as the summer comes to an end and the weather may be a bit hit and miss, allowing for quick (and repeated) retreats. And if you've ever wanted to live in a cave, well now's your chance!

And the edge at the Roaches provide some very nice walking too.

We have all 12 places booked, and the cost will be £20 for the weekend.

I'm going to be away for a month from this Friday, but another committee member (yet to be nominated) will co-ordinate the finer points of the meet. But in the meantime, if you are interested in attending then please voice your intention below.

Thanks peeps,

Karl

I wish I could attend but I've got a birthday bash that weekend (in Croydon of all places) and I'm dragging Vicki along with me. Have fun thought folks, the Roaches is one of my favourite destinations.

Beth, if you are looking for a severe lead then have a go at Black and Tans. I led it last time I was there and it was lovely and felt nicer than a lot of the V Diffs I've climbed on grit. :)

Blacks and Tans

I remember getting a hex totally wedged when i climbed Blacks and Tans. Isn't there a holly bush enroute too, just to add a bit of spice!

Karl

Please sign myself, Huw and also Chloe up for this one, sounds good.

Beth - can you put all 3 of us down for a Judith please - whatever that may be? Although if it involves no cooking for me, I'm in....

Cheers

The true identity of the Judith will be revealed in due course :)

Pete, I'll be cooking any meat in a separate pot so it's no bother at all doing a veggie portion if you are interested, I might just have a veggie one myself.

Thanks for the recommendation Vic, I'll check it out. Surely a midway tree provides extra holds, bonus! Anything for a macaroon.

Use of alpine tree, knee or arse renders macaroon offer null and void
